Time to Diversify.
I want to start a business and the product that I want to produce is a Publication. Lots of you reading this are think the Publication business is dead and you are correct; publications dealing in News, Business, Fashion, Gossip, Politics, Adult-Oriented Stuffs, Woman Issues, Lifestyle, Health and Wellness... all of them are on the decline. But publications that deal in a micro-demographic are still operating within a comfortable profit margin. The demographic I want to capitalize on is History.
The Product (in brief): The product will be a quarterly publication (magazine) focusing on the history of a major US city. The magazine will feature a cover story, biography of a notable individual from that city, biography of a notable business from that city, architectural break-down and history of prominent buildings, a look back at notable events, history of a neighborhood, a sports section, various fun facts about the area and photos, photos, photos.
The key feature of the magazine will be to provide people with the history of their area that they know exists, but have no clue where to find it. How it will be profitable: Shifting the financial burden from the advertiser to the subscriber will be the key to making this Publication a success. The magazine "George" failed because they gave out millions of free subscriptions and believed that advertising revenue would cover the operating costs. It was an Epic-Disaster. Newspapers and Magazines are folding because advertisers are switching from print to Online and Cable advertizing outlets. Since this publication will enter a competitor-free market, competitive pricing is not an issue; and selling subscriptions at a moderately inflated market rate will eliminate the need for this publication to rely on advertiser dollars.
The publication will be produced on a quarterly-basis. Each unit's estimated cost will be between $2.15 to $3.60 (depending on printing volume and shipping). By selling a yearly subscription at $22.00, we receive at least $7.60 per subscriber to operate with and collect a profit from. All printing of the publication will be done on a print-to-order basis. So if the subscription isn't collected then the copy isn't printed, which eliminates the primary source of wasted revenue for new publications. And because all printing and operating costs will be paid for by the subscriber, all advertising revenues collected will be marginal profit (Free Money!).
Marketing (in brief): The marketing plan works to collect 10,000 subscribers from a market population of 2.6 million within the first year. Of the 2.6 million market population, 740,000 fit our consumer demographic. Reaching 10,000 subscribers will be realized by setting up a series of subscription outlets at key community events and by an online advertising campaign through Google and Yahoo.
The Gimmick offered at community events to lure subscribers will be a photo-drive where we will copy and catalogue people's old photos for historical record. Many non-profit organizations use this method to solicit donations with much success. We will do the same for subscriptions.
